Page Title: The title of the page tells learners where they are. Course Title: Here's the title of the course, front and center. Learners will know they're in the right place right from the get-go. Navigation buttons: These buttons take learners to the main sections of the site. They should be on every major page. Why? Well-designed sites allow users to easily get to the main areas with one click. Page hyperlinks: These hyperlinks jump to specific sections of the syllabus, helping learners quickly get where they want to go. Course objectives: What specific knowledge and skills can learners gain from taking this course? Good idea to let them know up front! Back to top: Whenever you use hyperlinks to the middle of a long page, include a link providing quick access to the top of that page.Instructor information: This is a good place to put information about how learners can contact you (by phone or e-mail). Also, tell them about you, your experience, professional and research interests, publications, and more. Texts/Resources: Here's the list of course textbooks and how to find them. List optional texts, if appropriate. I like to put links to online booksellers here to make it easier for learners to find the texts! You could also link to your school's bookstore. Course calendar: IMPORTANT! Here's a week-by-week run-down of what's going on in the course. In my calendar, I include the week number, dates, topics for the week, required readings, and assignments. It's a good idea to be very, very, very redundant (I know, bad pun!) with important dates (like assignment due dates), so I put them here and elsewhere, too. This is especially critical for online courses since learners need a road map of the course to make them feel more comfortable. And I like to make the week numbers into links, so learners can get directly to course materials for that week.Course Assignments: I give a very brief description of each major assignment and describe how the points add up to a final score. The specific assignment instructions are in the Assignments section of the site. Text links: A repeat of the navigation bar at the top. Your page may require the user to scroll down to see all of the content. This menu at the bottom allows the user to move to another section without scrolling back up.
